Pokéshopper Pokémon Time Database Legacy
Nearly two decades after its debut, Pokémon Time remains one of the most beloved Pokémon Center brands ever created. Its influence can still be seen in modern Pokémon lifestyle collections, minimalist collaborations, and designer merchandise. Yet nothing has quite replicated the charm of Pokémon Time’s bug-eyed aesthetic. For many collectors, Pokémon Time represents the perfect intersection of Pokémon fandom, Japanese design culture, and limited-edition collecting—a line that transformed familiar monsters into pieces of art. Among all official Pokémon merchandise ever produced, few lines have achieved the cult status, collector demand, and design influence of Pokémon Time. To casual fans, it was simply another Pokémon Center merchandise line.
To collectors, it became something much larger:
Today, original Pokémon Time releases—especially plush, mascot straps, and Eeveelution merchandise—are among the most valuable and difficult-to-find Pokémon Center exclusives on the secondary market.
Origins: Why Pokémon Time Was Created
Pokémon Time launched in 2008 as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Pokémon Center retail brand. The concept was revolutionary for its era.
Instead of using Sugimori artwork or anime artwork, Pokémon Center commissioned play set products to completely reinterpret Pokémon through a retro-modern design language. According to interviews with designer Shirou Nakano, the goal was to create merchandise that felt nostalgic, sophisticated, and timeless—almost as if Pokémon had existed in the 1970s as a lifestyle brand rather than a video game franchise.
This was a major departure from Pokémon merchandise of the early 2000s, which largely targeted children.
Pokémon Time instead targeted:
In many ways, Pokémon Time predicted the modern Pokémon Center aesthetic that dominates today.
The Design Language
1. The Famous “Bug Eyes”
The single most recognizable trait.
Every Pokémon received:
This style transformed even intimidating Pokémon.
For example:
2. Geometric Simplification
Every Pokémon was reconstructed using:
Many Pokémon are almost unrecognizable when reduced to pure geometry, yet Pokémon Time somehow retained perfect recognizability. This is one reason graphic designers often praise the line.
3. Vintage Color Theory
Unlike traditional Pokémon art featuring:
Pokémon Time often used:
The result was merchandise that could sit in an office, bedroom, café, or designer apartment without looking like children’s merchandise.
The Evolution of Pokémon Time
Although many collectors simply refer to “Pokémon Time” as one line, Pokémon Center actually released it through numerous campaign waves over more than a decade. Each campaign focused on different Pokémon and regions.
The Holy Grail Release
No discussion of Pokémon Time is complete without Wave 8.
Released June 6th, 2015, the entire campaign focused exclusively on:
The collection included dozens of products, including:
Why It Became Legendary
Several factors collided:
Perfect Timing - 2015 was peak Eeveelution popularity. Sylveon was still relatively new. Umbreon and Espeon were exploding in popularity. Eevee itself was becoming one of Pokémon’s most marketable mascots. The Pokémon Time style worked unbelievably well with Eeveelutions. The large eyes and rounded forms transformed them into adorable fox-like creatures.
Blind Box Culture // Rubber straps were sold blind-box style.
There were:
Collectors often purchased entire cases attempting to complete sets.
Plush Collectibility
The mascot plush line became an instant hit.
Each Eeveelution received a matching mascot keychain plush.
Today complete mint sets are exceptionally difficult to assemble.
Collector discussions frequently cite values reaching hundreds of dollars per individual mascot, particularly for Umbreon, Espeon, and Sylveon.
Why Pokémon Time Matters Historically
Pokémon Time changed Pokémon merchandising forever.

Many modern Pokémon Center collections owe a creative debt to Pokémon Time.
