Pokémon ULTRA SUN AND ULTRA MOON

Pokémon Sun (Japanese: ポケットモンスターサン Pocket Monsters Sun) and Pokémon Moon (Japanese: ポケットモンスタームーン Pocket Monsters Moon) are the primary paired versions of Generation VII and are set in the Alola region. The games are available on the Nintendo 3DS.

Pokémon Ultra Sun (Japanese: ポケットモンスター ウルトラサン Pocket Monsters Ultra Sun) and Pokémon Ultra Moon (Japanese: ポケットモンスター ウルトラムーン Pocket Monsters Ultra Moon) are the second paired versions of Generation VII and are the upper games of Pokémon Sun and Moon, respectively, featuring an alternate storyline. The games are available on the Nintendo 3DS.

The games were announced worldwide on June 6th, 2017, at 11 pm JST through Nintendo Direct. The paired versions were released worldwide on November 17th, 2017. All copies of the game are playable in nine languages: Japanese, English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

During the presentation of the games reveal, it was revealed that the mysterious Pokémon shown on the packages of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon are in fact Necrozma. After taking over the Legendary Pokémon Solgaleo in Pokémon Ultra Sun or the Legendary Pokémon Lunala in Pokémon Ultra Moon, Necrozma becomes Dusk Mane Necrozma or Dawn Wings Necrozma! Dusk Mane Necrozma can use Solgaleo’s signature move Sunsteel Strike and Dawn Wings Necrozma can use Lunala’s signature move Moongeist Beam. Alongside these new forms of Necrozma, two new Ultra Beasts, UB Assembly and UB Burst, were also shown. Details about these mysterious beings will be unveiled later.

Fans who purchase either game before January 10th, 2018 will receive the in-game special early purchase gift Rockruff that can evolve into the new Dusk Form Lycanroc will know different moves depending on which version of the game you buy. In Pokémon Ultra Sun, it will know the move Fire Fang, while in Pokémon Ultra Moon, it will know the move Thunder Fang. The special Rockruff will be distributed holding a Focus Band and will also know the move Happy Hour which will allow you to receive twice as much prize money after battle. An exclusive Z-Move for Lycanroc was also revealed—Splintered Stormshards. This new Rock-type Z-Move can remove various effects from a terrain, and can be used by having a Lycanroc learn the move Stone Edge and then having it hold the special Z-Crystal Lycanium Z. All three Lycanroc, Midday Form, Midnight Form and Dusk Form, can use Splintered Stormshards.

A Pokémon-themed New Nintendo 2DS XL system was unveiled. The New Nintendo 2DS XL design has a Poké Ball motif with a three-dimensional replica of the Poké Ball’s button in the center of the system’s body. The new design launches November 3.

Pokémon Alola Region

The Alola region (Japanese: アローラ地方 Alola region)

In addition to the overall order, the Alola Pokédex splits Pokémon into four sub-listings: the Melemele Pokédex (Japanese: メレメレ図鑑 Melemele encyclopedia), with 120 Pokémon; the Akala Pokédex (Japanese: アーカラ図鑑 ʻĀkala encyclopedia), with 130 Pokémon; the Ula'ula Pokédex (Japanese: ウラウラ図鑑 ʻUlaʻula encyclopedia), with 130 Pokémon; and the Poni Pokédex (Japanese: ポニ図鑑 Poni encyclopedia), with 100 Pokémon. In-game, the Pokémon in each island's listing retain their general Alola Pokédex number, such as Pikipek's number being #010 in all of the island listings even though it is the first Pokémon in all but Melemele's list.

Similar to the Hoenn region, the Alola region is made up islands and is completely unconnected to any mainland. The Alola region consists of 4 main islands and one artificial island. The names of the islands are:

  • Melemele Island
  • Akala Island
  • Ula'ula Island
  • Poni Island
  • Aether Paradise (Team Rocket's Castle)
